ition affecting 3-5% of all children. This presentation will focus on the
clinical presentation of sleep apnea in children including the various ph
enotypic variants that have been identified to date\, approaches to the di
agnosis of the disease that extend being overnight polysomnography\, and d
escription of some of the more important end-organ morbid consequences of
sleep apnea in children. The second presentation will then encompass an i
mproved understanding on the pathophysiology of morbidity in sleep apnea i
n general. In addition to well-stablished processes such as inflammation\,
autonomic nervous system imbalances and remodeling\, the lecture will als
o focus on novel mechanisms encompassing gut microbiome\, senescence and b
lood brain barrier permeability.* Part #1: Clinical Presentation\, Pathop
hysiological Considerations and Diagnostic Approaches* Part #2: End-Organ
Morbidity and its Mechanisms\, As Drivers of Phenotypic VarianceCourse Obj
ectives:To enable the audience to recognize symptoms and signs associated
with an increased risk of sleep apnea in children. To identify the various
diagnostic modalities\, their advantages and limitations. To recognize phen
otypic variance and the potential mechanisms driving morbid consequences o
f sleep apnea. About Our Presenter:Dr. Gozal is currently the Dean of the
Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and Vice President for Health Affairs o
f Marshall University in Huntington\, West Virginia. Dr. Gozal’s research
interests include projects such as gene and cellular regulation in hypoxia
and sleep disruption\, murine models of sleep disorders\, and genomic and
proteomic approaches to clinical and epidemiological aspects of sleep apn
ea in both adults and children. In addition\, he has pioneered biomarker d
iscovery and machine learning approaches for the diagnosis of sleep apnea
across the lifespan. More recently\, he has begun exploration of the role
of the gut microbiome and circulating exosomes as mechanistic effectors an
d biomarkers in sleep disorders and associated morbidities. He is Past Pres
ident of the American Thoracic Society\, the world leading organization fo
r pulmonary\, critical are and sleep medicine\, was a member of the Board
of Directors of the Sleep Research Society 2014-2016 and is Deputy Editor-
in-Chief for the journal Sleep\, and Associate Editor for ERJ\, Pediatric
Pulmonology\, and Frontiers in Neurology and Frontiers in Psychiatry. He h
as been the recipient of the ATS Amberson Lecture in 2002 and was awarded
the William C. Dement Academic Achievement Award by the American Academy o
f Sleep Medicine in 2013\, and the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award of the
National Sleep Foundation. He has also received two honorary doctorates fr
om the University of Barcelona and University of Lleida in Spain. His rese
arch work has been continuously supported by grants from the NIH since 199
2\, and he has published over 850 peer-reviewed original articles carrying
a H index of 137 and &gt\;80\,000 citations along with nearly 200 book ch
apters and reviews\, edited 7 books\, presented more than 1\,000 scientifi
c abstracts\, and has extensively lectured all over the world. The Northern
