Charlton Ho, DDS – “The 10 Keys to Early Retirement for Young (And Not So Young) Dentists”
Dr. Ho’s lecture is built on the experiences of his journey to financial independence, and he shares what he considers to be the key factors that allowed him to reach his goals and retire early. Attendees will learn what to do and what not to do in helping them reach their financial goals.
Dr. Ho was in private practice in Mclean, Virginia from 1989 until 2018. At the age of 47, he was able to reach financial independence and retire, but chose to stay engaged in dentistry in some form and continues to do so even to this day due to his love of dentistry. In the past Dr. Ho has lectured for Patterson Dental and Dentsply/ Sirona on CEREC Technology and has spoken at the UNAH Dental School in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, as well as study clubs both locally and internationally. In 2019 Dr. Ho presented a version of this lecture at the Dental Maverick Summit in Austin, Tx.
Douglas H. Mahn, DDS – “The Gummy Smile. So Much More Than Gums And Gingivectomies”
Doctors say they know a Gummy Smile when they see one, but how many can define what it is beyond "too much of the gums showing." Knowing exactly what Excessive Gingival Display is and knowing its many etiologies is critical to choosing the correct treatment. Often there is not just one etiology. Often there is not just one treatment modality that needs to be employed.
Dr. Mahn has been involved in esthetic dentistry for thirty years. As a periodontist, he performs perio-plastic procedures and helps general dentists achieve their cosmetic goals. He is a regular speaker for small study clubs and at large meetings, such as the AAP. He currently has 53 publications, many of which involve perio-plastic procedures and esthetic dentistry, and 3 specifically discuss management of the gummy smile. The most recent article (Compendium 2022;43(2): e9-e12) was a study of gingival display involving 736 subjects, ages 20 to 27 years.
Course Objectives:
·Definition of Excessive Gingival Display (EGD) and its Prevalence;
·Etiologies of EGD
·Appropriate Treatment Modalities for each Etiology (These will include gingivectomies, crown lengthening, orthodontics, orthognathic surgery, Botox and lip repositioning surgery
Niloofar Mofakhami, DDS – “Minimally Invasive Dentistry for the Pediatric Population”
Pediatric dentistry is shifting toward a more conservative, minimally invasive model. This 30-minute lecture will help GPs take part in this trend by explaining what minimally invasive treatment entails in the pediatric population, reasons for the shift toward this type of treatment, and its importance and relevance in dentistry.
Dr. Niloo received her dental degree from VCU School of Dentistry and completed her two-year residency in pediatrics at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and a member of the American Dental Association, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Niloo currently practices in Oakton, VA.
Course Synopsis Objectives: It will include an overview of the following four topics:
Silver diamine fluoride (SDF). I will discuss what SDF is, indications and contraindications for its use, and how this tool has changed our practice for the better. Glass ionomer cement and restorative materials. I will discuss their use on primary and permanent dentition and how their esthetics and longevity have improved. Hall technique for crowns. This technique, which is primarily used to restore molars with stainless steel crowns and maxillary incisors with high-viscosity glass ionomer cements, has gained popularity in the last few years as it does not require preparation of the tooth. It has enabled pediatric dentists to treat young, uncooperative patients without having to use sedation. Radiation safety and ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable) guidelines. With the increase in the incidence of thyroid and pediatric cancers, we need to do our part to minimize radiation exposure for our young patients. I will review ADA guidelines on the type and number of recommended radiographs for each age group and what you should look for on radiographs of pediatric patients.
Ali Nosrat, DDS – “External Cervical Resorption: Etiology, Diagnosis, Treatment and Outcome”
External cervical resorption (ECR) is a less-understood clinical condition in the field of dentistry. There is compelling evidence suggesting that the history of orthodontic treatment is a factor associated with developing ECR lesions. The number of ECR cases has been increasing as orthodontic treatments become more affordable for Americans. Diagnosis and treatment of ECR is always a challenge for clinicians.
Dr. Nosrat is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics. He is a scientific reviewer for the Journal of Endodontics, International Endodontic Journal, Australian Endodontic Journal, and Dental Traumatology. He is a part-time Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and a full-time practitioner at Centreville Endodontics. He is an active member of the AAE and ADA and currently serves on the Research and Scientific Affairs Committee of the AAE.
Course Objectives:
·Review the etiology and histology of ECR lesions as well as steps involved in diagnosis
·Review the treatment options and the decision-making criteria for different treatment approaches (surgical and non-surgical) using the state-of-the-art 3D imaging technology
·Present step-by-step several clinical cases that involve diagnosis, treatment planning, non-surgical treatment, surgical treatment, and long-term outcomes.
Nate Schoenly, DDS – “Cracked Teeth: Diagnosing to Decide Retention Versus Extraction”
Cracked teeth are a conundrum in terms of diagnosis and treatment planning. Management often includes the utilization of multiple treatment modalities. New research and imaging modalities have made it easier to diagnose cracks and fractures and to predict success more accurately following treatment. Using a combination of the latest research and his own cases, the speaker will provide a roadmap to navigate the diagnosis and treatment of cracks.
Dr. Schoenly attended the University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine in Buffalo, New York, where he completed his Doctor of Dental Surgery and Certificate of Endodontics. To stay informed on developments within his field, Dr. Schoenly holds memberships with American Dental Association and its components, Korean American Dental Association, and the Alpha Omega International Dental Fraternity. He is also a member of the American Association of Endodontists and Virginia Academy of Endodontics. Dr. Schoenly practices at Dominion Endodontics in Arlington, Alexandria and Falls Church.
Course Objectives:
·Learn / review steps in identifying a crack or fracture (cracks will be presented on a dynamic spectrum rather than static clinical findings)
·Learn techniques to help identify cracks and their extent (a combination of simple clinical diagnostic tests and advanced imaging can help confirm the presence of a crack and determine its extent).
·Use clinical evidence to develop prognostic factors to predict success/failure prior to starting treatment. (A combination of peer-reviewed literature and the speaker’s cases will be used in combination with a simple to follow flow chart).
