This course will fulfill the VA Board of Dentistry’s requirement of 2 CE hours on pain management

Synopsis:

Using commonly prescribed drugs as a starting point, this presentation explores the control of post-operative dental pain, and the antibiotic(s) of choice for oro-facial infections. What is the new FDA warning about codeine and tramadol in children? Why are NSAIDs more appropriate than opioids for treating post-operative dental pain. What are some concerns about NSAID prescribing in the geriatric population? Is antibiotic prophylaxis required for patients with an orthopedic prosthesis? What is antibiotic stewardship and how does it affect me.? Clinically relevant drug interactions with dental medications will be discussed.

Course Objectives:

• how to minimize prescribing opioids for the control of post-operative dental pain
• how to combine analgesics to maximize their effects.
• current recommendations for SBE and orthopedic prosthesis prophylaxis (they have changed)
• a practical and useful pharmacologic approach for treating Oro facial infections
• the information needed to satisfy the Virginia State Board of Dental Examiners requirement for opioid prescribing.
• medications prescribed for Tardive dyskinesia and how they may interact with dental medications

About Our Presenter:

Dr. Harold L. Crossley is Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland Dental School. A native of Rhode Island, Dr. Crossley received a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Rhode Island in 1964. He was later awarded the Master of Science (1970) and Doctorate degrees (1972) in Pharmacology. The University of Maryland Dental School in Baltimore awarded Dr. Crossley the DDS degree in 1980. Dr. Crossley has co-authored several articles and four books dealing with a variety of topics within the field of pharmacology. Drawing on a unique background, Dr. Crossley has become nationally and internationally recognized as an expert on street drugs and chemical dependency as well as the clinical pharmacology of dental drugs.
