Synposis: As artificial intelligence rapidly advances in dental technology, clinicians must understand both its capabilities and consequences. This course and its subsequent round table discussions will explore how AI is being created and setting parameters to analyze radiographs, photographs, and 3D digital records to aid in diagnosing dental and periodontal conditions. While these innovations promise enhanced precision, they also introduce ethical, legal, and regulatory complexities. We will examine how AI output should be ethically interpreted, implications of insurance companies relying on AI to determine claim status and reimbursement, and the risks and responsibilities surrounding HIPAA compliance. Additionally, we’ll discuss whether AI-generated diagnoses hold legal weight and how patient behavior and trust intersect with AI use. This interactive session will equip dental professionals with a framework to critically evaluate and responsibly implement AI technologies in practice.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the diagnostic capabilities and limitations of AI in dentistry.
  • Evaluate ethical, legal, and HIPAA considerations in AI implementation.
  • Identify how insurance use of AI and patient perspectives may impact care and reimbursement.
  • To help guide creating office protocol and strategy for safe and thorough use and documentation.
